1 Down Cloth
A fabric made for ladies' mantles for cold climates. The yarns were spun from mixtures of wool and down from aquatic birds. A layer of carded wool was covered with down and a second layer of carded wool placed over this then all was carded together. This mixture yarn was used as weft with a combed wool warp. -

3 Down Wool Yarns
A term to distinguish the worsted yarns made from wool grown in the South of England, and the finest of which is Southdown. The yarns are strong, but rather short in staple, and used for Meltons billiard cloth. West of England cloth, etc. Counts vary from 4/12's to 4/24's and up to 2/24's. Such down wools as those from Norfolk, Sussex, Oxford and Shropshire are chiefly used for hosiery yarns for hard-knitting, fingering and for crewel yarns. -

A coating fabric made by weaving feather down into undyed woollen warp. The weft is made of wool and feather down twisted together. -

7 Cadet Cloth
A woollen coating fabric with a nap finish. Woven in five-shaft doeskin twill, three up two down, giving a warp face. Other twills are used, but this gives the best results. The colour is bluish grey, and the cloth is used for uniforms in military schools. -
8 Plain Cloth
Cloth in which every warp thread passes alternately over and under successive picks of weft, and in which adjacent threads weave exactly contrary to each other, viz., when odd ends are up, even ends are down, and vice versa. Chiffons, georgettes, crepe-de-Chines, taffetas, some poplins, etc., are plain weave styles. -
